Press Release: Don’t Follow the Herd
For Web Business Success in 2008 Don’t Follow the Herd
When It Comes to Web Sites, Some Things Never Go Out of Style
SANDPOINT, Idaho — Hype-filled terms like Web 2.0 got a lot of media play in 2007, but do trends like “social media” make real business sense? Susan Daffron of Logical Expressions, Inc. offers a few common-sense tips for getting more from the Web in 2008, inspired by her book “Web Business Success: The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Web Sites That Work” (ISBN: 978-0-9749245-0-2; LCCN-2006909228).
1. For business owners, jumping on the latest Internet fad is often not a good idea. Terms like Web 2.0 are bandied about endlessly, but what do they really mean? Look at the business issues surrounding new technology first. Just because something is “in” doesn’t mean it’s right for your business. Don’t follow the herd for no reason. It doesn’t matter if FaceBook is the latest greatest thing online if members of your customer base never visit that site.
2. Some things never go out of style. Web sites that load quickly and provide real information invariably trump sites that are nothing more than over-designed eye candy. Consider the popularity of Craig’s List (http://www.craigslist.com). The site provides a service people want and uses no graphics at all. It is speedy on even the lowliest dial-up connection.
3. Keep the techno babble to a minimum. No one likes to feel stupid, so explain things in simple terms that anyone can understand. If you have an ecommerce site, don’t overwhelm people with too many choices. People will just hit the “back” button and your opportunity for a sale is lost forever.
Daffron suggests that when it comes to Web sites, speed, simplicity, clarity, and clean design never go out of style. Instead of obsessing on the latest fad or buzzword, talk to your customers and find out what they really want from your business.
